Two French Treats

Tartine and Chocolat Chaud

What You Will Need for Your Tartine

1 slice bread

butter

jam

What to Do

Spread butter and your favorite jam on a slice of bread to make a tartine. It will be delicious all by itself or with a bowl of chocolat chaud.

 

What You Will Need for Chocolat Chaud 

2 1/4 cups milk

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup sugar

1 bar (3.5 ounces) bittersweet chocolate

1/4 cup cocoa powder

What to Do

1. Ask an adult to give you a hand with this recipe. Start by chopping up the chocolate bar.

2. Stir the milk, water, and sugar together in a saucepan.

3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.

4. Add the chopped chocolate and cocoa powder and bring to a boil again, whisking.

5. Remove from the heat.

6. Blend (with a blender or immersion blender) until thick and foamy.

A Costa Rican Favorite

Gallo Pinto

What You Will Need

1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil 

3 cloves garlic 

1 chile 

2 cups cooked beans (black or red)

1/2 cup bean broth, the water left over from cooking the beans

2 cups cooked white rice

2 teaspoons vinegar

Salt to taste

What to Do

1. Ask an adult for help with this recipe. To get started, cut up the garlic cloves and chile.

2. Heat the pan to medium hot and add the oil. 

3. Add garlic, chile, beans, and bean broth.

4. When beans are bubbling hot, add rice, vinegar, and salt.

5. Cook at medium heat until the liquid is absorbed, then cook a minute or two longer.

6. Breakfast is ready! You can put sour cream and chopped chives on top if you want, or eat it with avocado slices.
